Peter Wood grew up in the projects of Cleveland, Ohio during the late forties and early fifties. Peter is a practicing Buddhist and a fervent, proselytizing anarchist (a tradition inherited from his parents, probably ignited by their many trips to Mexico). He paints with his fingers, spreading oil on the canvas, diffusing the paint from the broad black figure outlines, creating vibrant fields of transparent and luminous colors.

Peter’s first memories of the African American and Blues experiences he depicts were of attending a concert of Cleveland native Charles “Cow Cow” Davenport with his father in December of 1955. His father also regularly took the Wood family to hear Reverend Glenn T. Settle’s choir, “Wings over Jordan” at the Gethsemane Baptist Church. Peter says, “those old musicians were true revolutionaries in their own way.” And saints too, he decided, adding Blues figures to his extensive iconography that already included Buddhist and Latin American heroes.
