Charlie Parker spent more time in Los Angeles than anywhere outside of Kansas City and New York.
Parker’s prolific and historic first three trips to Los Angeles have been collected together as Bird In LA, a 4-LP Box Set featuring 28-tracks of mostly unreleased and incredibly rare recordings.
Highlights include “How High the Moon” from his historic 1945 engagement with Dizzy Gillespie at Billy Berg’s, previously unknown performances from a 1948 “Jazz at the Philharmonic” concert at the Shrine Auditorium, & the complete recordings of the infamous 1952 “naked party” at the Altadena ranch of Jirayr Zorthian.
Bird may be gone, but to paraphrase Rick in Casablanca, “We’ll always have LA.”
