In July 1960, Charles Mingus and Max Roach organized a rebellious festival at Cliff Walk Manor, RI, in protest against the commercialization of the Newport Jazz Festival. This alternative event, managed entirely by the musicians, featured a diverse lineup including traditional artists like Jo Jones and avant-garde players such as Eric Dolphy. The resulting unity led to the formation of the Jazz Artists Guild, culminating in a studio recording session capturing the spontaneous and spirited essence of the original gathering. Noteworthy is Booker Little's "Cliff Walk," showcasing drumming legends Max Roach and Jo Jones in a captivating exchange.

Despite aspirations for more concerts and recordings, this movement was short-lived, making this recording a unique and singular achievement. Produced by Nat Hentoff at Nola Penthouse Studios in New York, the album features an exceptional lineup including Abbey Lincoln and boasts insightful liner notes by Hentoff. Remastered by Bernie Grundman, this album preserves the brilliance of performances by jazz luminaries like Charles Mingus, Max Roach, Booker Little, and others in a historic and vibrant musical showcase.
